Proverbs 10:19 (ESV) “When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent”.
Yep, many words make it easy to say something related to either the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. It is wise to not say anything when you feel enticed to say something about someone. Stop that tongue and think for a while. “Is what is going to come out of my mouth anywhere near helpful, life giving? Or is it meant to make me look good/ smarter/ wiser..fill in the blank.
Small talk can become deadly. I know all about that. In my life there have been people talking about me:
- without knowing all the circumstances.
- without even asking me if something was true or not.
- without any compassion.
It is upsetting, frustrating, painful and utterly damaging. The Good Lord saw me through it all.
It is true what Jesus said when he pointed out to treat others like you would want to be treated. Would you like to hear lies about you through other people? Would you like to be condemned without facts? Would you like to be talked about behind your back? Nah, I didn’t think so.
That is why I get an allergic reaction whenever I encounter gossip. It is never positive and speaks of the low self esteem of the person gossiping. If you have something to say about someone, make it positive. Point out the good thing someone did. Compliment each other instead of tearing each other down. Whenever you hear something that makes you go..uh..what?, ask the question why.
- Why is that person doing what they say he or she is doing?
- Why is the person gossiping saying these things about someone else?
- Why don’t I go to the person that was discussed and ask them if they need any help because of what you just learned about them. You get the idea…That is character and showing love.
Good place to start. Show love, be the salt and the light. Christ is asking you to do so. In everything you do, do it to the glory of God. That is how you make disciples and share His love.
Have a wonderful day and say something positive:-)
